MONTERREY, NUEVO LEON — Nuevo León has consolidated its position as a primary engine of Mexico’s economy after outperforming the national economic growth average by more than three times during the first quarter of 2026.
According to data from the State Quarterly Economic Activity Indicator (ITAEE), published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), Nuevo León’s economy expanded by 1.4% between January and March. In contrast, Mexico’s nationwide economic activity grew by just 0.4% during the same three-month period.
This performance places the northern border state among the top national leaders contributing to the country’s broader economic momentum.
The state’s growth was driven by significant surges across key sectors:
- Primary Activities: Surged by 26.8%, leading overall expansion.
- Construction: Grew by 5.4%, reflecting ongoing infrastructure developments.
- Commerce: Increased by 3.9%, serving as one of the largest structural contributors to the state’s quarterly performance.
Betsabé Rocha, Secretary of Economy for Nuevo León, highlighted that these figures demonstrate the state’s resilience and capacity to maintain economic momentum amid complex global conditions.
“Nuevo León is experiencing a historic moment of economic growth,” Rocha noted. “Our state continues to grow above the national average thanks to corporate trust, the strength of our industry, and the talent of our workforce.”
Rocha added that state strategies focused on attracting foreign direct investment, supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and boosting regional competitiveness continue to deliver concrete results, ensuring sustainable long-term economic development for local families.
