MONTERREY, NUEVO LEON — In a historic milestone for the fast-casual dining industry, Chipotle Mexican Grill announced on July 13, 2026, that it is expanding into the very country that inspired its globally recognized cuisine. The California-based chain is set to open its first-ever restaurant in Mexico on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The inaugural location will open its doors in San Pedro Garza García, an affluent municipality within the Monterrey metropolitan area of Nuevo León. The region was carefully selected due to its booming economy, status as a major corporate and innovation hub, and a growing population with an affinity for fresh, convenient dining options. Following the announcement, investor optimism surrounding the company’s global prospects pushed Chipotle’s stock (NYSE: CMG) to a four-month high.
To navigate the new market, Chipotle has entered a strategic development agreement with Alsea, a premier restaurant operator managing major brands like Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza, and Burger King across Latin America and Europe. The brand’s signature menu—comprising customizable burritos, bowls, tacos, and quesadillas—will be prepared fresh daily using whole ingredients, completely free of artificial additives or preservatives.
Chipotle executives expressed excitement about testing consumer preferences in a nation deeply rooted in rich culinary traditions. “We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country’s culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence,” said Scott Boatwright, Chief Executive Officer of Chipotle.
The Monterrey debut serves as a vital proof-of-concept for the brand’s broader “Recipe for Growth” strategy, which targets 350 to 370 new international and domestic openings in 2026 alone. Looking forward, Chipotle and Alsea plan to establish additional outposts throughout the state of Nuevo León later this year, with an official expansion into Mexico City slated for 2027.
