Indoor physical activity has been a source of tragedy in Nuevo León. In recent months, three men have died while exercising in gyms, all located in the Monterrey metropolitan area.
Authorities are investigating the cases to determine whether the causes are related to underlying medical conditions or if there are other factors to consider.
Latest case: Guadalupe, May 28
On Tuesday night, a strong police and emergency services response was deployed to a gym located on Miguel Alemán Avenue, at its intersection with Bonifacio Salinas, in the municipality of Guadalupe.
A 42-year-old man, whose identity has not been revealed, began to feel unwell while exercising. Although medical assistance was immediately requested, he collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The establishment closed after the incident, and the area was cordoned off by forensic experts. So far, the official cause of death has not been confirmed, and an autopsy is expected to determine if there was an underlying medical condition.
Five days earlier, another man died inside a gym located in Plaza Akumal, on Avenida Juárez and Hidalgo, in the Los Elizondo neighborhood, in the municipality of Escobedo.
The victim, between 60 and 65 years old, also suddenly collapsed while training. Upon arrival, paramedics confirmed that he no longer had vital signs.
Although it was reported that the man had a history of heart problems, authorities have not revealed the outcome of the investigation or his identity.
First case: Guadalupe, February 2025
The first case in this sequence occurred in February, also in Guadalupe. The victim was identified as Amauri Rafael, 36. The incident occurred at a gym located in the Tamaulipas neighborhood, on 18 de Marzo Street.
Amauri was using an extension device when he began to feel ill and collapsed. Despite attempts to assist him, he had already died by the time emergency services arrived. In this case, a heart attack was also considered a possible cause, related to the deceased’s cardiac history.
Although all three cases shared the fact that they occurred during exercise routines at gyms, the ages and circumstances vary. However, they all agree on the sudden loss of consciousness and the impossibility of on-site resuscitation.
Authorities continue to investigate, and autopsies are expected to shed more light on the causes. Meanwhile, specialists have begun to warn about the importance of regular medical checkups before beginning intense exercise routines, especially for people over 35 or with a history of cardiovascular disease.
