The low-cost airline Viva Aerobus is starting this week five weekly flights from Miami International Airport (MIA), in South Florida, to Monterrey and Mérida, in Mexico, Miami-Dade County announced in a statement on Tuesday.

Viva Aerobus has partnered with American Airlines to operate flights from Miami to Monterrey on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and to Mérida every Tuesday, starting this Tuesday, and Saturdays.

“México has been among the top three most active international travel markets for MIA,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava in a statement marking the inauguration of the flights.

The country was MIA’s third-largest international market in 2023, responsible for nearly 1.6 million passengers from the airport last year, the statement detailed.

Eliel Campuzano Mendiola, the acting Consul General of México in Miami, highlighted that Monterrey (Nuevo León) is considered the industrial and business center of México, as well as a significant educational hub.

Based in Monterrey, Viva Aerobus began operations in 2006 and expects to operate 190 daily flights in 2024.

Both Miami routes will be served by the airline’s A320 and A321 aircraft with 186 and 240 seats, respectively.

The low-cost airline is the fourth to launch passenger services at Miami Airport this year, along with Condor Airlines, LEVEL, and Avelo Airlines.

Miami International Airport is the busiest in the United States for international cargo and the second busiest for international passengers.

MIA offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other airport in the United States and is also the main economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida, generating commercial revenues of 31.9 billion dollars and approximately 60% of all international visitors to Florida annually.
