Foreign investment in Mexico grew 12% in 2022; These 5 states are the ones that captured the most

The FDI registered in Mexico endorsed the United States and Canada as main trading partners, with 15,000 million dollars and 3,800 million dollars, respectively.

The Ministry of Economy reported that during 2022, foreign direct investment (FDI) was 35,292 million dollars, which means an increase of 12% compared to 2021, when it was 31,544 million.

According to this preliminary figure, the FDI registered between January and December 2022 came from 3,485 Mexican companies with foreign capital participation, 5,739 trust agreements and 24 foreign legal entities.

Of the foreign investment reported, 48% corresponds to new investments in Mexico; 45%, to profits that did not return to their country of origin and the remaining 7%, to loans and payments between companies of the same corporate group.

36% of FDI corresponds to the manufacturing sector, where the manufacture of automobiles and trucks, the manufacture of electronic components, the manufacture of auto parts, the manufacture of equipment for the generation and distribution of electrical energy and the basic iron and steel industry stand out.

The agency headed by Raquel Buenrostro indicated that, additionally, there is a record of FDI of 5.5 billion dollars that correspond to transnational companies whose headquarters of corporate group is in Mexico and generate investment through their subsidiaries abroad.

The five states with the highest FDI registered during 2022 were Mexico City, with 10,923 million dollars; Nuevo León, with 4,397 million dollars; Jalisco, with 2,895 million dollars; Baja California, with 1,877 million dollars and Chihuahua, with 1,876 million dollars.
