The adjustment will take effect throughout the national territory, except in Sonora and Quintana Roo.

Autumn has already begun in Mexico and that means that there is less and less left to adjust the hands of our watch again.

The Ministry of Energy (SENER) of the federal government reported that the time change will take place on Sunday, October 31, at 02:00 in the morning. The modification will enter into force throughout the national territory, with the exception of Sonora and Quintana Roo.

In the case of the border state of Sonora, the reason is economic,  since the government of the entity agreed in 2016 with the Arizona executive to create a commercial region to promote mutual growth. Consequently, both states decided to equalize their schedules.

As for Quintana Roo, since 2015 the entity of the Mexican southeast adopted the time zone of 75 west, one hour more than the center of the country, and the same as New York or Havana. The decision was due to tourist reasons, since it was intended to guarantee travelers one more hour of sunshine throughout the year.

In addition, in 33 border municipalities in northern Mexico, the change will be made on the first Sunday in November, that is, on the 7th, since it is the date on which winter time begins in the US.

The localities that will be synchronized with the neighboring country are Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, Playa Rosarito and Tecate, in Baja California; Juárez, Ojinaga, Ascensión, Coyame del Soto, Guadalupe, Janos, Manuel Benavides and Praxedis G. Guerrero, in Chihuahua; Acuña, Piedras Negras, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jiménez, Zaragoza, Nava and Ocampo, in Coahuila.

Also Anahuac and Los Aldama, in Nuevo León; and Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, Matamoros, Camargo, Guerrero, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, Mier, Miguel Alemán, Río Bravo and Valle Hermoso, in Tamaulipas.

Is the clock slow or fast?

The good news is that on October 31st the clock goes back an hour. At 02:00 in the morning, it will be one. And this means that we can enjoy sixty more minutes of sleep.

Sener recommends that the population turn the hands of analog devices on the night of Saturday, October 30, just before going to sleep, to wake up on Sunday with the new time. Do not forget that most technological devices automatically make the change.

In Mexico, the modification has been carried out since 1996. Although the main purpose is to reduce energy consumption during the summer months, the measure has caused great controversy, especially in recent years. And it is that some organisms and institutions have demonstrated that it can produce stress.

According to the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), time modifications affect people’s physical, emotional and intellectual performance. In children, it can alter their sleep cycle, and the need to eat, while in older people it can also alter their rest, and cause episodes of anxiety and insomnia.

In March 2020, just with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, deputies from the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) then urged President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to eliminate or suspend daylight saving time, so as not to generate more situations of anxiety and stress.

The president then urged the Ministry of Energy to make a report detailing how much the population saves thanks to this modification. Finally, it was decided to keep the summer hours.
