Mexico City and Nuevo León—two of the host locations for the 2026 World Cup—have announced the cancellation of classes and a shift to remote work for the matches kicking off the tournament’s Round of 32. On Monday, June 29, BBVA Stadium (Monterrey Stadium) will host the match between the Netherlands and Morocco, while on Tuesday, June 30, the Azteca Stadium in the south of the capital will be the venue for a game featuring Mexico against an opponent yet to be determined, with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line.

On Friday, the Mexican government published a decree in the Official Gazette of the Federation cancelling classes and mandating remote work in Mexico City for Tuesday, June 30. A few hours later, the Governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, announced that the same measures would take effect in that northern state on Monday, June 29. The decree applies to all public and private schools—ranging from preschool to higher education—that fall under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP). It also applies to public servants, with exceptions made for essential activities in health, security, customs, critical infrastructure, and World Cup logistics. Regarding the private sector, the governments of Mexico City and Nuevo León are urging employers to facilitate remote work and flexible scheduling arrangements to improve mobility and prevent overcrowding on public transportation.

In Monterrey—host to four World Cup matches—the Fan Fest at Fundidora Park has become the epicenter for match broadcasts and celebrations throughout the tournament. On Thursday night, more than 150,000 people packed the main stage for a concert by the regional Mexican band Grupo Firme. The match between the Netherlands and Morocco on Monday afternoon will mark the conclusion of World Cup action at BBVA Stadium. In a video message shared on his social media, García stated that Monterrey is preparing to welcome between 15,000 and 20,000 Dutch fans arriving from the United States.
