The federal government emphasized that coordination between authorities and the arrest of key individuals has led to a historic drop in crime in the state.

Crimes such as homicides have seen a drastic drop in Nuevo León over the past eight months, as confirmed by the federal government at its morning press conference this Tuesday.

And they provided an explanation. The identification and arrest of the so-called “generators of violence” has been the “key” action in combating crime in Nuevo León over the past 10 months, said federal Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch yesterday from the National Palace.

A “generator of violence,” as Nuevo León Secretary of Security Gerardo Escamilla explained in an interview with El Horizonte, is a person who has recently participated in or coordinated murders, drug sales and distribution, and armed attacks.

The identification of these individuals, both officials agreed, is achieved through intelligence actions, information shared by both levels of government, which is then used in joint operations.

Last July alone, 579 “generators of violence” were arrested in Nuevo León, according to state data.

This Tuesday, at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference, a security report was presented, highlighting that Nuevo León is one of the states that has made the most positive progress in the fight against crime, with homicides falling 73% from September 2024 to last July.

“In Nuevo León, the arrest of several perpetrators of violence in the state, including that of Ricardo ‘N’, alias ‘El Ricky’, in February, identified by the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) as second-in-command of the Northeast Cartel, led to a 72% reduction in homicides in July 2025 compared to September 2024.

“In recent weeks, an operation carried out with the National Intelligence Center, Sedena, and the Civil Force of Nuevo León stands out, where two members of the Northeast Cartel were arrested and 16 firearms, a rocket launcher, magazines, and cartridges were seized,” Harfuch said.

During Sheinbaum’s six-year term, almost all crimes in Nuevo León have fallen because, according to experts and authorities, there is now “true coordination” that takes actions such as arresting key figures who generate violence in the state.

From October From 2024 to July 2025, homicides fell 41% compared to the same previous period, while other crimes such as femicides decreased by 71% and robberies by up to 21%.

This Tuesday, the federal government confirmed this trend, but with another perspective that shows a greater reduction, comparing the daily average of homicides last September, which was five per 100,000 inhabitants, with 1.35 homicides last July, representing a 73% decrease.

“In Nuevo León, a clear downward trend is observed, with a 72.9% decrease in homicides in just 10 months,” explained Marcela Figueroa Franco, executive secretary of the federal National Public Security System.

In an interview, Escamilla said that with the arrest of the “generators of violence,” 2025 will be the year of best security for the state.

“We are in a phase of containing high-impact crimes; homicide has seen a significant decrease so far this year. What we want is to continue strengthening our capacity to identify perpetrators of violence, to work hand in hand with the Coordination Group, and this has to be the best year in terms of security.”

“The perpetrators of violence are those individuals who engage in illicit activities and for whom there is information implicating them in recent crimes, whether it be drug distribution or a crime such as homicide or injuries to persons with a firearm,” he indicated.

“Are they ringleaders, so to speak?” he was asked.

“No, not necessarily ringleaders, but it is a person about whom there is information that allows us to prosecute, and this case has been handled through the prosecutor’s offices, and about whom we have information that they are implicated in recent crimes,” he affirmed.

Positive trend also at the national level

On the other hand, nationwide, intentional homicides decreased 25.3% since The start of Sheinbaum’s administration, with an average of 64.9 daily cases in July 2025 compared to 86.9 in September 2024, equivalent to 22 fewer murders per day.

Seven states account for 51.5% of homicides: Guanajuato (11.96%), Chihuahua (7.2%), Sinaloa (7.2%), Baja California (7.1%), State of Mexico (6.6%), Guerrero (5.9%), and Michoacán (5.6%).

Civil Force, the best evaluated

It should be noted that, in July 2025, the Civil Force of Nuevo León obtained first place nationally in citizen trust and perception of performance, according to the National Survey of Urban Public Security by INEGI.
