Nuevo Leon will celebrate International Mother Language Day

To celebrate International Mother Language Day 2024, the Ministry of Culture of Nuevo León joins the initiative of the Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) which, through the National Reading Room Program (PNSL), supports thousands of volunteers from all over the country, who carry out activities to promote reading.

The PNSL, with 30 years of experience, contributes to their professionalization, provides them with a collection and supports the processes that arise from their reading communities, which represent the multiculturalism and linguistic diversity of Mexico.

This Friday, February 21 at 3:00 p.m., the Inaugural Ceremony of the talks in commemoration of International Mother Language Day will be held. It will be led by María Angelina Barona del Valle, Reading Training Manager of the Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) and Sofía Trejo Orozco, Assistant Manager of Reading Rooms, of the FCE.

Silvia Interian, mediator of the Koox Xook/Let’s Read Reading Room, speaker of the Mayan language from the State of Yucatan, will also be there, and Vicente Cruz, mediator of the Sna’jel K’inal/Learn to Live Reading Room in Chiapas, speaker of the Tojolabal language who works in the State of Chiapas.

Later, at 3:30 p.m., the first panel will be held with the participation of: Gisela Hernández Muñoz from the State of Veracruz from the Árbol del Trueno Reading Room, speaker of the Nahuatl language, Rosa Asunción Fajardo Durán from the State of Yucatan from the Abrazando la Paz Reading Room, speaker of the Mayan language, and José Contla Peña from the State of Tlaxcala from the Tonantzi Reading Room, speaker of the Nahuatl language.

They, together with José Guillermo Talvera from the State of Quintana Roo of the Libros Cautiverio Reading Room and Omar Cristiam Santos from the State of Oaxaca of the Río de palabras Reading Room, a speaker of the Mixtec language, will discuss “El wewetlahtolli: the ancient word” in order to make visible the knowledge and expertise of older adults as guardians of their culture in indigenous communities.

At 5:15 p.m., the event “Evaluation of public policies on indigenous languages ​​and their link with Reading Rooms” will feature the participation of mediators Estefania Libertad Alvarado Vázquez from the State of Quintana Roo from the Camino al origen Reading Room, Tirso Bautista Cárdenas from the State of Veracruz from the Papalotl Reading Room, a Nahuatl speaker, and Vicente Cruz Gómez from the State of Chiapas from the Sna’jel K’inal (Aprender a vivir) Reading Room, a Tojolabal speaker.

Together with René Alberto Vera Conteras from the State of Quintana Roo from the Hojas de Hierbas Reading Room, they will present their experience as reading mediators who promote reading in bilingual and even multilingual contexts.

At 7:00 p.m., it will be the turn of Maribel Villegas Calderón from the State of Morelos of the Moyotlchikahwah Nahwas siwahmeh/ The strength of the heart of the Nahwa women reading room, a Nahuatl speaker; Silvia Interian from the State of Yucatan of the Koox Xook/ Let’s read reading room, a Mayan speaker; Zuani Cristóbal Petronilo from the State of Puebla of the In uitsyotl Mayauetl/ The thorns of Mayahuel reading room, a Nahuatl speaker; and Carolina Zuñiga Zúñiga from the State of Querétaro of the Jun Akit: I am a hummingbird reading room to talk.

They will talk at the round table discussion “Echoes and views of women in native languages” and will explain in Spanish and in their native language the relationship between women in their communities, reading, writing and the narrative of life.

The day will end at 9:00 p.m. with a brief closing address by Sofía Trejo from the PNSL and some participants. International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in November 1999. This celebration highlights the role of languages ​​in promoting inclusion and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Multilingual education not only promotes inclusive societies, but also helps preserve non-dominant, minority and indigenous languages. It is a cornerstone for achieving equitable access to education and lifelong learning opportunities for all people.
