As one of the venues for the 2026 World Cup, Nuevo León will require labor for the entertainment and food industries, so migrants who speak English could be of great help in the state and at the same time they would benefit from formal jobs.
Federico Rojas Veloquio, head of the Labor Secretariat in Nuevo León, indicated that the World Cup would bring more than economic benefits to the State.
“One very important thing, taking advantage of the fact that the World Cup is coming, we are helping to certify all companies that are dedicated to entertainment or the food industry so that they have collaborators who speak English and collaborators who provide the best quality in service.”
That, he said, is a very big opportunity for all migrants to be able to work in the entertainment service industry.
“There will be many job openings, we need to give the best image of Nuevo León and, above all, if we can give them the training we are guaranteeing that the companies that are dedicated to that will have all the best trained personnel,” Rojas Veloquio stressed.
He reported that the agency has been prepared for some time with linkage programs.
“We have been working since we arrived, together with the National Institute of Migration, with the Secretariat of Equality of Inclusion, with the other international institutes that deal with migrant issues,” said the secretary. “We are ready for any circumstance that may occur; there is employability for everyone, there is training and employment and we are ready for whatever.”
Rojas Veloquio pointed out that a policy that President Claudia Sheinbaum is seeking is that, first, the nationals stay in Mexico.
“That is something that the Federal Government is asking for, because they do not have problems with employability because ultimately the only thing they do is update their IMSS issue, their RFC issue.”
For those who are foreign migrants, the official added, there is a process that is done through the National Institute of Migration, through the SAT and through the IMSS to obtain their registration and get their humanitarian visa, if applicable, so that they can carry out work.
“We will link them with the employment exchange or we will give them the training so that they can celebrate, if they already have training, update them; we give them official notice through the two institutes.”
How many migrants will arrive?
“The truth is that not even the Federal Government knows. We do not know how many they can deport, but I will give a figure: in Nuevo León 150 thousand migrants transit on their way to the United States and between 5 thousand and 8 thousand, depending on the year and the situation of each country, are those who stay in Nuevo León.
“And through the program that we bring, in coordination with Equality and Inclusion, they are those who obtain employment or who stay formally to work. “It’s a really small rate for what is said to be coming from migrants,” Rojas Veloquio said.
