Mexico has exported 193,704 head of cattle to the US


The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) reported that Mexico has exported 193,704 head of cattle to the United States during the first eight weeks of the 2020-2021 cycle, which represents a growth of almost 40 percent in relation to previous similar period.

In a statement, he stated that even with the health contingency due to Covid-19, Mexican producers exceeded by 55 thousand 209 heads the export achieved until week eight of the 2019-2020 cycle, which closed with the commercialization of 138 thousand 495 live animals .

The export cycles of cattle to the United States comprise 52 weeks, which are counted as of September 1 and end on the last day of August of the following year. In the previous cycle, Mexico sent 1,392,863 head of cattle.

According to a report on the matter from the National Service for Agri-food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), of the total number of animals exported in this cycle and up to week eight, 145,158 (75 percent) are standing calves and 48,546 are heifers (25 percent).

With cut to October 27, Chihuahua heads the list of exporting states, with 75 thousand 635 head of cattle; it is followed by Sonora, which has sold 58,384; Durango, 23,357; Coahuila, 11,760; Tamaulipas, 9,165; and Nuevo León, with seven thousand 57 calves.

(Sader) highlighted that the recognition of tuberculosis that allows Mexican producers to export their livestock is possible thanks to the effort that technicians and producers make to carry out the work of the National Campaign Against Bovine Tuberculosis, operated by (Senasica), through which It has been achieved that 86.12 percent of the national territory is in the eradication phase of the disease, with a prevalence of less than 0.5 percent.

He indicated that the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has recognized 23 regions of low prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in Mexico so far. Of these, 10 have the status of Modified Accredited, so they can export with the tuberculin test of the calves that are going to be commercialized, and 12 more regions have the status of Accredited Preparatory, so to commercialize cattle to the United States must present proof of lot and herd of origin.

Sonora is the only region recognized with Advanced Modified Accredited status, which means that it does not require tuberculin testing to export castrated cattle to the United States.
