MONTERREY, NUEVO LEÓN — Driven by the massive influx of foreign soccer fans for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, Monterrey International Airport experienced a dramatic surge in international passenger traffic during June, airport operator Grupo OMA reported.
The airport welcomed a total of 1,327,922 passengers throughout the month, with international traffic specifically jumping by 10.3% to reach 235,257 travelers. Growth spiked significantly as the tournament progressed. International arrivals rose by 12.9% between June 15 and 21, peaking with a staggering 25.5% increase during the week of June 22 to 28, which aligned with the highest concentration of World Cup matches hosted in the city.
To absorb the surge without disrupting standard operations, the terminal implemented several immediate upgrades, including modernizing security checkpoints, introducing digital passenger-flow solutions, and optimizing coordination with airlines and government border agencies.
Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of Grupo OMA, emphasized that while the tournament acted as an immediate catalyst, it fits into a broader, long-term structural expansion. OMA is currently executing an 8-billion-peso (approx. $440 million USD) investment plan solely dedicated to the Monterrey hub between 2025 and 2030. This initiative is part of a larger 16-billion-peso overhaul across its entire national airport network.
Local economic experts note that the true legacy of the tournament lies in this reinforced infrastructure. For Nuevo León, an economic powerhouse defined by manufacturing and nearshoring trends, enhanced global connectivity serves as a permanent asset.
The modernized airport is expected to continuously lower international trade friction, strengthen Monterrey’s role as a northern logistics hub, and boost the state’s appeal for foreign direct investment long after the World Cup concludes.
