A provocative, realist filmmaker who confronted the social conventions of postwar Germany with his works, Rainer Werner Fassbinder will be featured at the Cineteca Nuevo León.

Five unmissable films by the director will be screened from Thursday, February 5th to Saturday, February 14th, announced the Nuevo León Ministry of Culture through Conarte and its Center for the Arts, with support from the German Cultural Center Monterrey and the Goethe-Institut Mexico.

“Rainer Werner Fassbinder in Retrospect” is a series that includes a selection of five feature films that defined the career of one of the most controversial directors in film history, who died prematurely at the age of 37, leaving behind a legacy of more than 40 films.

“That was a new way of seeing the reality of Germany through Fassbinder’s camera lens; he was completely innovative and daring with films that were a hit with audiences in Monterrey through German cinema, which, in those years, was shown at the film club of the German Cultural Center. He was an example for many of the new directors who emerged in the 80s and 90s,” stated Michael Greszus, director of the German Cultural Center Monterrey.

This retrospective of Fassbinder (1945-1982) includes Katzelmacher (1969), which explores the conflict sparked by the arrival of a Greek immigrant to a group of young Germans; Effi Briest (1974), an adaptation of Theodor Fontane’s novel about a young woman trapped in an aristocratic marriage and the consequences of a past romance.

Also included is Ali: An American Tale (1974), an “impossible” romance between a 60-year-old woman and a Moroccan laborer; Satan’s Roast (1976), a biting dramedy about a writer in crisis, and The Marriage of Maria Braun (1978), a chronicle of a woman’s social ascent during German reconstruction.

Also included in the program is Enfant Terrible, a biopic that earned Oliver Masucci the Best Actor award at the 2020 German Film Awards.

General admission to the Cineteca Nuevo León is 70 pesos, and 50 pesos for students, teachers, and seniors with an INAPAM card.
