The driver’s license would be free in Nuevo León.

In the Congress of Nuevo León, an initiative was presented to allow motorists to obtain a driver’s license for free. The proposal by Deputy Claudia Chapa Marmolejo seeks to amend Articles 4 and 12 of the Law Regulating the Issuance of Driver’s Licenses in the State.

Proposal for Free Driver’s Licenses in Nuevo León

In her legislative initiative, the deputy mentions that this measure will boost job creation in Nuevo León, whether as public transport drivers or for digital platforms like Uber or DiDi.

“This undoubtedly helps users a lot, because in addition to facilitating the process of obtaining an official document, we also open a window to job creation, whether in public or private transport through applications,” explained Chapa Marmolejo.

According to the local legislator, this proposal already exists in other states of the country, such as San Luis Potosí, and has proven to be functional without harming state finances.

Who Could Obtain the License for Free?

Chapa Marmolejo’s proposal indicates that all people applying for their driver’s license for the first time will not have to pay to obtain it. The measure would also apply to private vehicles and public transport, including taxis, digital platform transport, or buses.

Although the process would be free, this does not exempt drivers from meeting the already established requirements, such as the driving course and exam.
