José Merino will be head of the Digital Transformation Agency

Merino was in charge of the Digital Agency for Public Innovation of Mexico City during the government of the current president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum.

On June 26th, Sheinbaum announced at a press conference that José Antonio Peña Merino will be the head of the Digital Transformation Agency of the federal government from the beginning of her government, on October 1.

Remember that we proposed the creation of the government’s Digital Transformation Agency. I can tell you at once that its owner is going to be José Antonio Peña Merino. We are going to introduce him later, but it is almost obvious that having done a great job in the city, he is going to be in that area,” Sheinbaum said.

On June 19, during a meeting with the country’s business leadership, the president-elect announced the creation of a Digital Transformation Agency, whose objective will be to digitalize processes within institutions such as the Tax Administration Service (SAT).

Who is José Antonio Peña Merino?
José Antonio Peña Merino, known as Pepe Merino, is a prominent figure in the field of economics and political science in Mexico.

Merino studied a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) and a PhD in Political Science at New York University (NYU).

He began his academic career as a professor at ITAM in 2006, extending his teaching to the master’s degree in journalism and public affairs at CIDE in 2014.

He is also the founder of Data Cívica, an organization focused on the defense of human rights through the use of data; as well as Data4, a company dedicated to data analysis.
